For the want of a mortar a war was lost.
I am not sure whether I have heard the News on the TV ( I am hearing impaired halas! ) correctly as it sounds preposterous that Australian soldiers in Afghanistan have no access to personally launched rockets or mortars, in the absence of heavy artillery, and have to rely on helicopters or jets for artillery support. One does not need a Duntroon Degree in Military Studies to appreciate that a mortar on the ground would more efficiently hit the enemy since the long line of communication between front-line and remote fire power ( inclusive of helicopters and jets sometimes piloted by excitable French or Italian women ), would be eliminated.
According to the News, our soldier' task is made more dangerous and difficult by this lack of platoon-level-support-fire.
Why don't our Career-conscious upper-echelons-brass object in the supposedly correct, if to-day mythical, Australian bluntness and love of common-sense?
I remember wondering how heavily, quickly and successfully, no wonder really as they used 150 mm. howitzers and tanks and blasted off entire villages before sending in the Infantry, the Pakistanis recently went into their attack against the Talibans within their borders. And.............wonders of wonders, no squeamish reporter of ours, the humane, yellowish, effeminate souls, said a word of criticism about what, one might call it in Canberra, the " heavy handedness " of the Pakistanis.
No one in the Islamic World said anything either as apparently only Moslems are allowed to use heavy-handed, rationally organized, war-methods against Moslems.
Allah forbids all Infidels, according to Islamists, heavy-handedness.
Why not send in Australians with bayonets and daggers only, blindfolded and with their right-hand-arm tied behind their back?
That would be extremely MACHO and EPIC!!!!!!
Now, why do we deny our soldiers use of, say, 90 mm. mortars if not even a 120 mm one here and then ?
Is it to avoid damaging the villages, killing civilians?
How comes the Pakistanis did not bother about rubble or civilians?
Come on DUNTROON--GRONGOS!
Wake up!
Give the poor buggers a chance!
Another way of getting the message through would be to make platoons with Parlamentarians and Politicians, including the ladies, and give them a taste of war according to the Rules of Conduct.
Cosgrove, why don't you say something?
